AI Stock Valuation: How to Research AI Winners Without Ignoring the Price

A continuously refreshed research note connecting current market developments with a repeatable stock-analysis workflow. Updated September 26, 2026.

Current update — September 26, 2026

Micron’s fiscal Q4 report on Wednesday, September 30, is a clean read on AI memory’s earnings power. Since June, Micron has disclosed approximately $22B of cash deposits and related commitments across 16 multi‑year strategic customer agreements—designed with take‑or‑pay terms and pricing floors. If durable, these shift memory from spot‑driven to contract‑anchored revenue and can stabilize free cash flow even through supply expansions. Below we outline what to verify in the print and call: revenue quality under the new agreements, HBM3E/HBM4 capacity and mix, DRAM/NAND bit growth vs. ASPs, capex cadence, and how all of that translates into sustainable margins versus today’s valuation.

Revenue quality: from spot to contracts

Use the $22B in deposits/commitments as a starting point, not a destination. Confirm: (1) how much sits as contract liabilities on the balance sheet; (2) revenue recognition mechanics (e.g., recognition as product ships); (3) any embedded pricing‑floor or indexation clauses; and (4) concentration among hyperscalers. Evidence so far—company presentations and June guidance—points to multi‑year visibility across data center, consumer, and auto. For valuation, a higher share of contracted units supports a narrower revenue range and a modestly lower discount rate than a pure‑spot model.

HBM and mix: margin driver number one

Management has indicated rapid HBM3E/HBM4 ramps and that a vast majority of 2026 HBM supply is already under pricing agreements. In Q4, watch: HBM share of DRAM revenue; commentary on yields and packaging; and any update on 12‑high/16‑high volumes. Given HBM’s premium ASPs and capital intensity, small yield improvements can move gross margin hundreds of basis points. Translate guidance into two scenarios: (a) HBM share rises faster than bit growth—expanding GM and FCF; (b) yield or substrate bottlenecks—slower mix shift and working‑capital drag.

Pricing and bit growth: reading the spread

Check DRAM and NAND bit shipments vs. ASPs. With long‑term agreements, realized ASPs may decouple from spot prints. If management reiterates that supply is sold‑through for calendar‑2026 HBM, model steadier DRAM ASPs even if commodity DRAM wobbles. On NAND, sustained pricing discipline would support blended GM but can constrain unit share. For the P&L bridge, attribute margin moves explicitly to (i) mix (HBM/DDR/LPDRAM/NAND), (ii) pricing floors, and (iii) cost downs.

Cash flow, capex, and external funding

Micron’s June materials noted customer deposits alongside U.S. manufacturing incentives and ongoing fab investments. For FCF, treat deposits as non‑operating inflows initially (contract liabilities) and focus on operating cash conversion excluding deposits. Capex phasing and any updates on HBM packaging capacity (previously guided to ramp through 1H CY2027) will refine medium‑term FCF. In DCF, increase capital intensity assumptions but reduce revenue volatility, then test whether today’s EV/EBITDA already prices that balance.

What would change the thesis Wednesday

Upside: acceleration in HBM revenue mix, confirmation that multi‑year deposits meaningfully expand into FY27–FY28, and a capex path that doesn’t dilute ROIC. Downside: delays in packaging capacity, evidence of customer pushouts, or guidance that implies pricing floors bite during a supply upturn. Near‑term, also watch any color on PC/mobile memory elasticity if rates stay elevated.

Manual research versus a structured report

The app is not a substitute for judgment. Its advantage is reducing repetitive collection and organization so you can spend more time reviewing assumptions, source quality, valuation sensitivity, and risk.
